Lakewood is a town in Washington County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. It lies northwest of Salem and southeast ofPortland. The first Europeans to visit the area were Juan Rodríguez de Fuca and his voyageurs on November 15, 1775. Fuca landed on what is now the eastern border of Lakewood and named it San Pedro de Atacama after his patron saint, San Pedro in Chile. Fulton Peak (2,724 feet / 710 m), located within the town limits but not part of it, is said to be the highest point in Oregon. The townsite was platted by Mormon settlers under grants from John Ogden Peabody on May 12, 1851. A post office called "Lakewood" was established in 1857; it closed unofficially on September 15, 1861 due to lack of subscribers. One account has it that an early settler described the site as being "...a large piece of land lying upon a small stream...it seemed like a good spot for a settlement." In 1868 local rancher James Waddell built a log cabin near present day Lakeside Park after leaving his rancho de Nopalera east of present day Lakewood proper. This became known as Waddell's Cabin because he resided there for some time before selling it to George Hickey in 1870s.(Hickey had also acquired parcel #1 from Waddell.) A school house had been built by 1863 when one Mrs Forster taught children from her home across Fourth Street from what is now Fourth Avenue South near Main Street NW in what is today Beavercreek Township; this structure burned down in 1873 while students were inside.(Forster may have been responsible for another school that operated nearby until1890.) In 1865 Union Pacific Railroad constructed its main line through Portland and Beavercreek Township; service began at Lakewood Station(now Canoga Park). In 1870–71 American Fur Company established an operation here including processing stages for their Columbia River fur trade products.(American Fur Co.'s operations continued until 1904.) In 1893–94 Tacoma Electric Railway constructed its system between Tacoma and downtown Seattle; service began at station #5 opposite present day Lakewood Golf Course.(Tacoma Electric Railway's line extended into lakeside neighborhoods such as Lakeside Park before ending at Everett.) The railroad abandoned its line through town during World War II.; however Amtrak uses portion of former trackage south of junction with Interstate 5 just outside city limits today

The town rose to prominence as a transportation hub during the late 19th century, thanks to its connections to both Seattle and Portland. The town's growth declined in the early 20th century, but it regained some of its lost ground in the 21st century.
