Lakewood is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area and is located on the eastern edge of the city of Tacoma. Lakewood was founded in 1892 by John Leland and his wife Sophia Mudgett as a small farmstead on the water's edge of what is now Boeing Field. The name "Lakewood" originated from nearby Lake Colman which had been named for Colonel Timothy Colman, an early settler in this region. In 1907, Leland donated land to establish what would become Lakewood High School. In 1916, he donated additional land to build a Municipal Building on Seventh Avenue NE; today that building still stands and serves as the town hall. In 1969, voters approved a $10 million bond issue to improve roads and infrastructure within the community including new schools, fire department, libraries and more parkland than ever before created in King County (the amount levied against individual citizens has not changed since then). Today Lakewood boasts two high school districts - Lakeside-Southwest Heights (LHS) and Northshore-Eastside (NE) - four middle schools/junior high schools (Central Lakeshore/Lakeside), six elementary Schools/ kindergartens (Bellevue Elementary/Belle Harbor Elementary; Forest Hills Elementary; Highland Park Elementary; Maple Leaf Jr./Snellgrove Middle School; Northwestview Junior High); three proctoring agencies: Everett Police Department Central Precinct; Kitsap County Sheriff's Office South Precinct 2nd District - which covers most of Everett Beach & rural areas adjacent to it - one daycare center: Our Lady Of Loretto Daycare Center located adjacent to Weybridge Road off I-5 just east of milepost 236

Lakewood was founded by fur traders in 1853 as an outpost on the eastern shore of Puget Sound. In 1881, it became the first incorporated town in King County. In 1933, Lakewood merged with nearby White River and Queen Anne to form what would become known as the "Big Three." The three towns experienced rapid growth during World War II due to wartime production and demand for military supplies and housing. After the war ended, much of the growth slowed down as people moved away from high-tech jobs in Seattle and Bellevue and towards more traditional occupations such as agriculture or service work. In 2007, Lakewood voters passed a resolution to establish itself as an independent city within King County with its own government structure and budgeting process. On November 3, 2007, City Council members voted 7-2 to finalize this plan and pass it onto Mayor Lisa Herbold for her signature. On January 2nd 2008 Mayor Herbold announced that she had signed off on creating a new city government which would begin operations on July 1st2008
