He sent word back to his wife and children that he had found "the most wonderful peak I ever saw".[2] In 1886, developer George Morrison bought 1/4acre (0.16 km2) of land on which he built what would later become Lakewood Park with money given him by Senator James Wickersham of Massachusetts as part of an effort to promote development along Puget Sound.[3] Lakewood's incorporation as a town took place on November 8, 1895[4][5]: it was one of many newly incorporated towns created from parts of Clark County during Territorial days when Washington Territory was divided between Oregon and Alaska.[6]:252 It retained its name for just over a decade before changing it to Lakewood after businessman Hargrave Lerner filed a trademark application for "Lakoda" in 1905[7]:206 In 1907–08,[8][9]:443 residents voted not to annex neighboring unincorporated communities such as Auburn or Woodinville because they felt those towns were too developed and had more amenities than their own community; lakefront property became available only after annexation proceedings began in 1912).[10][11] The town core is located around Broadway Avenue and Interstate 5 south of central Lakewood where most stores are located as well as KFC (now Pizza Hut), Jell-O factory outlet mall, movie theater complexes including Regal Cinemas (formerly Century Theatres), several banks including First National Bank - now Wells Fargo - several professional firms including Arnold & Porter LLP., numerous restaurants and bars covering all genres from casual dives to high-end steak houses; there are also several smaller businesses dotting the area such as home improvement stores Walmart Supercenter Store #1 across I-5 north from central business district,[12] pet store Lowe's Hardware store #2 opposite Broadway avenue within walking distance from most residences; large number of single family homes being built since late 2000s especially outside central Business District near interstate 5
