Lakewood is a city in Washington state, United States. The population was 15,823 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clark County. The Laser Sight Technology Corporation (LSTC) was founded in 1984 by a group of engineers who had been working on lasers for military and law enforcement applications. The company developed the first laser sights, which were used by the U.S. Navy and other militaries until 1986. Lakewood is a census-designated place (CDP) in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The CDP was named for Lakewood Cemetery and Recreation Area, which opened in 1907. The first post office in the CDP was founded in 1911. In 1951, it amalgamated with nearby White Settlement to form the new Lakewood–White Settlement CDP. Lakewood had a population of 2,752 as of the 2000 U.S. Census; this number grew to 3,046 by 2004. The majority of its residents are white but there are also a sizable minority of Asian Americans and Native American citizens. Black people make up just 0.2% of the population overall and 5%of households within Lakewood's boundaries have one black resident on average
The first permanent settler in what is now Lakewood was John Day in 1824. The town was platted in 1840 by James Fenton and David McKay, who named it for General George Washington. By 1851, the population had grown to 575 people. In 1862, after the American Civil War ended, the Union forces burned down part of downtown to destroy supplies brought over by Confederate forces. This destroyed much of what had been done to create a town since its founding. In 1865, further development began when a sawmill and grist mill were built on Crystal Creek east of town. A post office was established in 1870, and a flour mill followed in 1881. From 1889-1893, Lakewood was home to one of the largest mercantile companies in Puget Sound region with stores across the state capital city of Olympia. In 1893, local businessmen organized the Lakewood Republican Club which became an important political player during Seattle's early years as an incorporated city. In 1912-1913, lakewood’s first high school (now called Lakewood High School) opened its doors after being built from donated lumber from other businesses within the community. The school served as a model for many later schools throughout King County During World War II most of downtown was destroyed by German bombers but some parts were rebuilt including the library which reopened in 1945 after having been closed for several years due to damage caused by bombing raids during World War II
