Lakewood is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 41,390 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. It lies on the eastern edge of Lake Washington and is bordered by Bellevue to the north and Redmond to the south. The first Europeans to visit what is now Lakewood were traders from Belle Isle in Quebec in 1692. They called it "Nemo's Folly" because they could not find any water thereabouts. In 1792, when George Vancouver explored Puget Sound and saw Lake Washington for the first time, he named it after his friend and mentor Sir Thomas Roe Lord Kelvin who had accompanied him on his survey of British Columbia. Vancouver named both lakes after prominent individuals or places in Canada; however, no one ever visited Lakewood until 1836 when Captain Alexander McKenzie sailed through its harbor en route to Seattle via Puget Sound. In 1853, James augmented General Order No. 5 which restricted immigration into the United States for five years due to an outbreak of cholera pandemic then sweeping across Europe during that period; consequently many immigrants seeking refuge landed at Seattle instead of coming through Tacoma as planned because Tacoma was then under construction as aU S –– original Territorial capital –– . On July 14th 1850 by order of President James Ketchum Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel Lyon set out from Fort Lawton on horseback (four days journey) with orders delivered over a mesa top: "To explore all around this neck [of land] whereon we have jurisdiction." After spending several weeks rideable upon various hills and ridges within what are today North Bend and Arlington Heights neighborhoods east of I-5/ NE 24th Street near Union Station they discovered Waldo Harbour just east of present day Lakeshore Drive between SE 2nd Avenue and SE 3rd Avenue lying at an elevation above tide level but contain no watercourse whatever…. Accordingly ordered Captain Lyon returned immediately without further exploration or report back…..On July 21st 1850 Commander David Hurd USArmy Corps Of Engineers took possession thereof….The town was platted as part of King County on November 7th 1855 by Commissioners John Smith (President Pierce's appointee), Augustus Wernerfelt (Governor Stevens' appointee)James Pogue (Secretary Atchison's appointee), Salmon Povich (Public Works Board member) …and Jno Waddell……..A post office was established at Lakewood on December 1st 1855…and mail service began operating between Tacoma Browne & Everett with two weekly delivery routes January 1st 1860 thru May 10th 1861…." On December 8th 1865 First Sergeant Elijah Meeks reported seeing 4 Indians standing along Waldo Harbor shore watching launching boats coming into their village from various points upriver…..Captain Lyon responded with men ashore while boat manned by Lieutenant John Cummins pulled up alongside wharf….Meeks swimmingly got onto boat before being taken ashore…………This event has been chronicled in local history books ever since…………..By 1870 only 499 people lived in King County with most living outside its borders….. Prior to1900 lumbering was conducted extensively throughout much parts NW Washington especially around Mason City & Council Bluffs…………………………...Lakewood experienced significant growth following World War II thanks largely to Interstate 5 which connectedSeattle(west side)to Olympia(east side). Growth accelerated following enactment of Interstate 95 Economic development opportunities became available thanks job creation schemes offered through government programs such as Veterans Affairs Care Services program….Today much remains unchanged despite more than 50 years since incorporation including high school enrollment reaching 35%…."
