Lakewood is a city in Puget Sound, Washington, United States. The population was 24,812 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Thurston County and the county seat of King County. The area that would eventually become Lakewood was first settled by Métis people in 1851. A postoffice called "Lakewood" was established in 1857, and grew rapidly due to its proximity to Tacoma and Seattle. In 1865, Lakewood became a town when it amalgamated with nearby Mountlake Terrace. Lakewood is a town in Yakima County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area and forms the core of the Lakewood-Auburn-Bellevue Combined Statistical Area. The first resident of what is now Lakewood was John Stephenson who immigrated to America in 1847 from England. In 1893, his son James Stephenson donated land near downtown for a public park which became known as Stephenson Park. Lakewood had its beginnings when several families pooled their resources to purchase 640 acres (250 hectares) of meadowland on the east side of Cowlitz River north of today's downtown area in 1886. This land later became known as "The Land undesirable to build on" because few people wanted to live near a natural watercourse with no inhabitants or businesses. The early residents were farmers and fishermen who grew corn, wheat, oats and potatoes; built log cabin churches; raised horses and dogs; hunted deer, elk and bear; fished for salmon and trout upstream from their homes; gathered wild flowers and fruit trees around their home gardens; made baskets out of reeds for trade with other parts of Western Washington
