Lakewood is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 23,362 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in King County by population and the fourth-largest city in Washington after Seattle, D.C., and Tacoma. The Lakewood trade area spanned much of Northern Washington during its early days as a town. A post office was opened there on July 30, 1856. By 1860, it had grown to encompass all of what is now King County except for the towns of Grays Harbor and Ellensburg which were founded within the next few years. In 1872, a sawmill and grist mill were built on the present site of downtown Lakewood; they became successful and remain one of the most prominent businesses in town today. In 1875, a railroad was completed through town connecting it to Puget Sound via Seattle. This new development helped spur growth in downtown Lakewood while also providing jobs for many people who depended on agriculture or fishing for their income. In 1907, lakefront property across from town square was donated by J P Morgan to be used as an open-air shopping mall called "The Mall". The first anchors included Sears Roebuck & Company (later Sears), JCPenney & Co., Montgomery Ward (later Marshalls), Columbia Records (then Columbia Phonographic) and Knoppers Drug Stores (later Kohl's). By 1969 when it closed due to low sales prices after years of being underdeveloped by developers/owners alike Mayor John Sawyer decided that it would be more cost effective to demolish it than continue operating it as an open-air mall which would have required costlyMaintenance costs plus increased student rent rates etc.. The Lakewood School District serves the town and surrounding villages. The first people to live in what is now Lakewood were Native Americans who hunted and gathered game along the banks of the Willamette River. In 1853, when gold was discovered in Oregon, prospectors from nearby Everett traveled down to the river to take advantage of its potential for wealth. They founded a small community on land that became Lakewood after they abandoned their diggings there. By 1872, when railroad tracks were laid through King County, many residents had moved into the new town because it offered easy access to jobs on the railway. Early commerce in what is now Lakewood centered around agriculture and fishing; however, over time trade increased as Outward Bound Railway passengers stop at various stations throughout central King County for lunch or just a walk before continuing their journey eastward. The first store in what is now Lakewood opened in 1865; by 1870 this had become one of lakewood's most important businesses with an establishment that could accommodate more than 100 customers at once! A post office was established in1877 and remained operational until 1916; during this time mail service was provided by wagon road from Everett via Mount Vernon (later renamed Wenatchee) to Lakeside (now Auburn). In 1903 voters approved a $2 per capita assessed tax which funded local schools and infrastructure projects such as streetlights and water systems! One of lakeWOOD's earliest mayors was John Henshaw who served from 1886-1892 while also serving as Mayor of Everett from 1888-92. He came to power following an election victory that saw him defeat incumbent David Coddington 45%-45%. After leaving office he ran unsuccessfully for sheriff twice but one successful run for Congress later made him wealthy enough to enter politics again! As mayor he supported annexing neighboring Olympia intoKing County while also building roads and other infrastructure improvements that have helped make today's day easier than it might have been without his dedication! When he died suddenly after years of illness in 1925 he leaves behind an unfinished legacy–a municipality with broad public support but little progress being made on either local or national levels despite his efforts! After Henshaw's death much discussion took place about how best to honor his memory with some form of plaque or statue downtown though ultimately nothing materialized! Despite this lacklustre start many feel Henshaw would be proud knowing today that not only doesLakewood have a library but also several impressive buildings including both its own high school & college which are among Washington state’s top ranked institutions
