By 1951, there were over 100 gun ranges in the area, making Lakewood one of the most active areas for firearms enthusiasts in the region.
Lakewood is a town in Clark County, Washington, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Lakewood was J.F. Stephenson in 1853. In 1876, George Wickersham platted and named the town after Lieutenant Colonel John Quincy Adams (1767-1845), an American Revolutionary War officer and statesman who served as President of the United States (1829-30).Adams had been born in what would become Green Lake Township west of Seattle on February 17, 1767 to James Adams and his wife Hannah Smith Cooksey and grew up there until he left for America at age 16 to join his father's business interests in New York City three years later. In 1902, when Lakewood was annexed by Seattle as part of that city's growth, its citizens voted not to annex it again because they wanted their own town hall and school district within the city limits instead of sharing them with other municipalities outside of Seattle proper. In 1912, when King County became organized into counties, Lakewood incorporated as a village under an act passed by county commissioners concurrent with the creation of King County itself; however it never became a full municipality due to lack of voter support from residents east of Grant Hill Road northward. On May 10, 1959 voters approved passage by referendum of an ordinance creating a new township within the existing village which would have included all present day neighborhoods except for those east of Grant Hill Road - including those now part of Lakewood Village - raising land values there so drastically that most residents voted against incorporation even though they constituted only 23 percent (out OF THE 3 TIMES) Of total voting strength in that election campaign! A few months later on July 1st following annexation by King County more than doubled its current population to 711 people when Interstate 5 crossed over into rural Clark County just south/west of town limits; this rapid expansion caused many businesses and residences located along I-5 near downtown Bellevue/Seattle to move out or be destroyed as traffic congestion worsened around morning rush hours making it difficult or impossible for everyday citizens living off Main Street gridlock to commute comfortably or participate meaning less tax revenue for schools & services essential for keeping locals & tourists coming & going without undue disruption...the last straw came when construction began on I-5 Widening project known locally as "wideningthe avenue" pushing even more people onto main street past already congested gridlock resulting eventually in fatalities victims involved turning into beasts known locally as "CBZLs" corruption cases being looming large over development plans prior to eventual completion date ;)

The first Europeans to come to the area were fur trader George Vancouver and his party in 1792. The first permanent settler was James Lewis in 1825. The town of Lakewood was platted on July 4, 1847 by J.D. McLean and Wm.F. Cook as a farmstead on the east bank of the Spokane River. The town name is derived from an All-American football game played at nearby Spokes Park in 1887, which was called "Lakewood '27." The Spokane Valley Railroad arrived in 1901, providing transportation for settlers and goods between the valleys to the south and east. It became part of the Seattle- Tacoma Railway in 1915. In 1932, Lakewood obtained city status when it surpassed Pullman as Washington's third largest city by population; Pullman had been given city status by state law two years earlier. In 1986, Lakewood annexed Bellevue, former King County suburb that lay north of downtown on what is now University Way NE; Bellevue had been considered an exclave of Lakewood since its incorporation as a municipality in 1916 but annexation formalized desire for more contiguous development within its borders since then.
