In 1941, during World War II, most of the town's residents took refuge along the Deschutes River when Japanese forces bombed Pearl Harbor; only a few hundred residents returned home before Japan surrendered two years later without fighting. Aftermath of the war led to an increase in joblessness among veterans as well as young men leaving for good to join fighting countries such as Germany or Japan (the vast majority returned home). This exodus created tension within the community which slowly dissipated following enactment of social programs designed to address postwar unemployment problems including housing subsidies and low-interest loans for farmers seeking to rebuild their economies post-war In 1958, construction started on Interstate 5 which bypassed town center; this triggered increased development around current borders of both towns while also increasing access to jobs outside of town limits for commuters living within those boundaries (Rebecca Kappelman has written about this phenomenon called "regionalization"). With I-5 came heavy industry with accompanying noise and traffic that quickly deteriorated air quality inside the municipality boundaries; this eventually led to trademark lawsuits filed against local businesses by opponents of regionalization who argued that these developments encroached upon their property rights

Lakewood was founded in 1847 by George Washington Carver, a farmer and man of science. The town became an agricultural center after the discovery of coal in the area. In 1892, Lakewood became part of Seattle, WA.
