Lakewood, Washington is a small town in the Yakima Valley located about an hour and a half drive from Seattle. The population was 12,698 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wenatchee-Clark County Metro area. The town is named after Lakewood, West Virginia, where its namesake grew up. The first settler in Lakewood was John Denton in 1868. A post office was established in 1876, and by 1888 it had grown to include a store and four residences. Lakeside Park was developed around 1960 as a public park for residents of nearby Wenatchee. That year saw the opening of the first basketball court in what would become an annual tradition for the townspeople and their children. In 1978, Lakewood annexed neighboring community of Leavenworth to form one municipality with a total population of 16,553 people (13% of all residents). In 2002, voters passed an ordinance approving the construction of a new high school which would serve both communities within Lakewood limits while also accommodating students from other areas surrounding Yakima Valley schools (the annexation had not been completed when this report was compiled). The new high school opened in 2006 and has since been renamed Gillespie High School after its original benefactor—then-mayor Dick Gillespie Sr.—who endowed much of its $40 million cost with his own money. Lakewood, Washington is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 25,773 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the west side of Puget Sound and is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. It has been a small town since its founding in 1889. In 1969, Lakewood became one of the first cities in the United States to adopt an open-air shopping mall when it opened east of I-5 at 980th Street and Southworth Boulevard. Lakewood's early history may be traced back to 1851 when John Denny founded a log cabin near present day Lakewood High School. A post office was established at Denny's cabin in September 1851 and remained in operation until May 1865. In December 1865, Jens Jensen purchased land from Denny and built his first home here; it remains his house today. In 1870–71, Elisha Swayne surveyed land for what would become Lakewood by taking surveyor's notes and sketches from various locations around Puget Sound as he explored possible sites for a new town on thesound. He named his proposed town "Newport" after himself and two friends - Edward Everett (better known as Ebenezer) Quincy Grant and Nathaniel Hawthorne - who had accompanied him on his survey trip some years earlier while exploring Elliott Bayou (now called Union Bay). The townsite wasn't developed until 1888 when Wm Henson laid out a road from Everett to Newport which connected with US Highway 99 just north of present-day Bellevue Avenue. At that time there were only five or six homes in Newport; by 1912 there were over 100 residents living thereabouts . On October 16, 1889, Spokane County Commissioners met to set aside 1/4 mile (.25 km) of land south of Main Street between Eastlake Avenue and Union Bayou for incorporation into Lakewood as its own municipality; this action grants incorporation unto Lakewood Township on November 12th 1890 . The township was organized on January 3rd 1893 under Territorial Governor James Kittell with Wm Henson as Mayor . By 1900 there were over 200 citizens living within limits chartered by Lake wood Township; but growth slowed thereafter due to lack of industry & transportation along main arterial streets

In 1924, Lakewood became an incorporated town and has continued to grow since then.
