The community has experienced several waves of growth since its incorporation as a city: during the first half of the 20th century it grew by more than 50% each year; during the late 1990s it increased by more than 100%. Today Lakewood remains one of the most vibrant ethnically diverse communities in Northwest Washington; its citizens are proud of their highly diverse cultural heritage which includes Japanese Americans from Issaquah who have long been influential in local politics and business, African Americans from Tacoma who worked on streetcars that ran through downtown until they were replaced by buses in 1948, Hispanic immigrants from Mexico who came to work on sugar beets and potatoes for local farmers before being deported after World War II, Native Americans from nearby Mount Baker who ranched near town for many years before arriving here during WWII as well as numerous others whose ancestors arrived here earlier or later including Scandinavian settlers from Sweden who founded a lumber company hereabouts before moving on to other parts of America

In 1905, a group of businessmen led by Alfred Pyle bought large tracts of land east of downtown from the government for $1 million dollars. They named their new development "Lakewood" after themselves and began developing it into an affluent community largely composed of wealthy Japanese Americans who had brought their families over to America during World War II as employees or citizens of other countries. Many residents continued to live there until they left for good in 1978 when zoning changes made it illegal for businesses located within city limits to sell alcohol
