A few years later John Purdy applied for a position as assistant clerk at the city armory and soon became known as the “father” of modern gun cleaning in Lakewood because he developed methods for removing dirt, oil, grease and rust from firearms then unknown else where in America. boasted one contemporary article: “Purdy's method has revolutionized rifle work on our continent...In his hands even dirty old rifles look like new instruments; while his method can also be used successfully on shotguns deprived of all polishing action by previous owners...He [Purdy] is now working day and night at our armory without rest or sleep because his success depends upon its being kept up during World War I...It is safe to say that if American arms could only be kept clean there would not be any need for them during World War II!”

Lakewood is a community in Pierce County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tacoma–Anacortes–SeaTac Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1892 by two brothers who were entrepreneurs in lumber and mining. It grew rapidly during the early 20th century due to its location on the newly established Tacoma-Anacortes Railroad, which made it easy to get goods and people to Lakewood. In 1945, when Tacoma became an independent city, Lakewood lost much of its growth but continues to be one of the most popular communities in Pierce County. The primary industry today is agriculture with a focus on hay and vegetables. Lakewood's post office was established in 1893 and served as the Nyack post office from 1909 until it closed in 1984. Today there are three mailboxes located within town: box number 1 at the corner of First Street and Third Avenue; box number 2 at Fourth Street and McClure Avenue; and box number 3 at Fifth Avenue and 30th Street. The first school in Lakewood was built on what is now First Street near McClure Avenue in 1892. A second school opened on Friday School Road (now Griggs Road) about a mile east of where First Street meets McClure Avenue later that year. In 1893, Lakewood had just over 100 residents; by 1905 it had increased to 403 residents with a small grocery store being one of its earliest businesses along with several residences (most notably 95 Second Ave.). By 1912 there were six businesses functioning within town limits- four stores/bargain shops, one millinery store & dairymaid’s house (later renamed Lakeside), two mechanics workshops & blacksmith shop (& garage), two churches (one Congregationalist - later called Holy Cross Catholic Church -& another Methodist). By 1916 all but two business properties had been annexed into town limits making it an unincorporated village having a total population of 624 people including 128 children under eighteen years old! Two other small villages – Anacortes & Eatonville – also formed during this time period but they did not experience such rapid growth like Lakewood did

Lakewood was founded in 1853 by J.F. Richardson and named for the large body of water that surrounded it. The first settler in the town was James A. Lake, who arrived in 1853. After a few years, Richardson purchased land from the original settlers and built a log cabin on Snake Creek. In 1865, Richardson married Anna Maria Wetmore and moved to the town with her. They started a small grocery store and began trading goods with other settlements in the area. In 1870, Richardson erected a two-story brick schoolhouse to serve as an elementary school for the townspeople. That same year, he also donated land to build a Methodist church on his property. The First United Methodist Church of Lakewood was dedicated on May 12, 1870. The following year saw another growth milestone when Richardson donated land to build a cotton gin and mill on Snake Creek which soon became one of Lakewood's most important businesses. The early 20th century was difficult for Lakewood as World War I caused many businesses to close their doors; however, things changed after 1918 when America entered World War II and lake wood became an essential part of military production throughout Northwest Washington .
