The town was founded in 1892 by John Wanamaker and his family. Wanamaker built a trading post and store in what is today Lakewood. In 1915, the town became incorporated. The community was named for Wanamaker's older son, also named John Wanamaker. Lakewood has a wide variety of retail businesses including several restaurants, two bowling alleys, five gasoline stations and one convenience store. Lakewood is a small town in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,830 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Thurston Valley and around the perimeter of Lakewood Park. The first permanent settler in what became Lakewood was John Doolittle in 1854. He and his family built their cabin on a hill overlooking the original town site which they called "Doolittle's Ridge." The first school in what became Lakewood was built on this same location in 1868 by Prentice Chase and it operated until 1914. In 1896, Fannie Lou Hamer opened her grocery store at 5th & Oregon Streets which remains one of the town's most prominent businesses to this day. According to local legend, when logging began along the shores of Lake Washington some men went into such great numbers that they created an artificial lake – still visible today from where Highway 99 intersects it – by filling up a natural body of water with logs. This lake became known as "The Wasp" because so many people visited it to log; eventually it filled up and receded back underthe bluff again. When visitors stopped coming to visit during World War II, locals decided that there wasn't much point keeping an artificial pond if nobody ever came near it! So they drained it and created a new park around it which still exists today! In addition to its role as an important community center for Thurston County for many years (thanks largely to its public library), Lakewood has also been home to two high schools: North Thurston High School (nowNorthwest) opened in 1965 and then Wenatchee Valley High School (now Wenatchee Valley Community College) moved into the building vacated by North Thurston HS just north of US-99/SH-1 after being founded by then-Mayor Leroy Fensterwald as Wenatchee Valley Middle School in 1974). Additionally, Lowery Elementary School serving grades K-5 exists adjacent to both Lowery High School and Northwest High school off US-99/SH-1 east of I-5W on lower Rd., providing additional educational opportunities for those living within walking distance of either school district's campuses. Lakewood experienced significant growth following World War II due largely to its role as a military base during wartime period; however postwar growth slowed significantly until relatively recently due mostlyto suburban development outside of town limits
Lakewood was one of the original towns in Washington Territory. It was founded by George Vancouver in 1846, and named for him. In 1851, it became the capital of the territory and remained so until 1959.
