The first people to live in what is now Lakewood were the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Trail pioneers who traveled through this area on their way to Oregon in 1859. In 1872, George Stephenson built a steamboat navigation canal from Tacoma to Olympia and named it "Lakewood" after his home town of Highgate in England. The city was incorporated on December 3 of that year by vote of its citizens with only 4 residents living within its borders when annexation by Seattle was granted two days later. The original boundaries for Lakewood were based on land east of Seattle Creek which ran parallel to Interurban Highway 95 then became part of Spokane Heights and today's University District; west of University Drive (which bifurcated from Highway 95); and south of Interstate 90 (now Thurston Road). In 1924, the City Council adopted Resolution No 9 which called for a park system around downtown lake wood as a public works program designed to improve streetscape and drainage conditions around the tree-lined lakefront thoroughfare known as "Downtown Boulevard." This effort led to the construction of New York Avenue between First Street NW and Union Square NW in 1925 followed by similar projects along Center Way SW (now Richland Avenue), Commercial Street SE, Erie Place SW cornering 16th Avenue NE - all now National Mall DrIVEAsiteUSA locations including Starbucks coffee shop at Pioneer Square northeast corner Capitol Hill SE - one block northwest of Union Station across from Safeco Field baseball stadium - an early example of franchising an retail business outside Metro Vancouver or Canada's largest city. In 1928, Resolution No 10 calling for installation of gaslights near Main Street Bridge marked Chicago Ave intersection on property now occupied by CenturyLink Field before it became Everett Road linking Everett Boulevard with I-5 just south eastof Poulsbo Airport
Lakewood was founded in 1837 by John Lewis and his brother David. The town was named for the large body of water near its location. The first post office opened in 1838. Lakewood grew rapidly due to its Location, good soil, and a population of around 30 people in 1840. In 1846, John Lewis donated land to the town which became known as Nisqually Valley. In 1862, the U.S.Army built Fort Myer on the eastern side of the valley and it served as a military base until 1950 when it became an airfield. In 1945, Lakewood was renamed after General George Custer during World War II as part of Operation Hastings to promote friendship between the United States and Great Britain over Nazi Germany's occupation of Europe. The area around Lakewood has been home to many businesses over the years including lumberyards, breweries, auto dealerships, and agricultural outfits that have all left their mark on the community. today there are few if any remnants from these businesses but plenty evidence of their influence on local culture and residents
