Lakewood is a small town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,853 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1892 by farmers from British Columbia and named for John Lakewood, an early settler. In 1898 it became a U.S. post office under the name of Wenatchee; in 1902 it became Lakewood and retained that name until 1959 when it changed to its present one. The first permanent settler in what is now Lakewood was Nicholas Roanoke who arrived in 1792 and named it after his Virginia plantation Roanoke Island. The town was platted on March 12, 1857 by Wm. A. Purdy and Hyrum Sawyer under the name of "Bellevue". The first post office was established there on July 4, 1857. During World War II, Lakewood became one of several sites where Boeing had its manufacturing facilities for their B-29 Superfortress bombers. In 1945, Boeing moved its operations to Everett and built the Beatty Building which still stands today as the largest single structure in Lakewood's history. In 1966, a group of local businessmen donated land to build the new City Hall which remains standing today and has been used as a community center since then. In 1978, Lakeside Park opened with land donated by developer Don Weisfeldt. In 1995, construction began on Interstate 95/I-5 interchange near downtown which would connect I-5 with Puget Sound via an expressway bypassing Lakewood entirely However this project never came to fruition due to budget cuts within government agencies that year; instead both interstates were upgraded into current Routes 597 and 598 concurrent with I-405 throughout Pierce County As lakewood grew more popular for shopping opportunities during the late 2000s it lost some centers such as Beatty Plaza Mall (now known as Sam's Club) along with other retailers from Bellevue eastward until today only two remaining stores remain: One being opened by JCPenney in 2009 called 'Northshore' mall while another store closed down in 2016 originally known as 'Southshore'. Today there are few businesses left that serve primarily retail purposes including only 2 anchors: JCPenney & Sears property closed down SOUTHSHORE back when sam's club took over northshore

Lakewood grew rapidly during the 1870s and 1880s, becoming one of the most populous towns in Washington. During World War I, Lakewood became a center for munitions production. After the war, the town experienced rapid growth as people settled around its expanding shops and businesses. The population reached over 100,000 by 1940. However, due to suburbanization and economic decline in the early 21st century, Lakewood's population has decreased to about 50 thousand today
