Lakewood is a city in Washington County, Oregon, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, OR-WA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Lakewood were called "the Joes" because they visited the area in 1811 on their way from Vancouver Island to Oregon. They named their landing site Fort George after King George III of Great Britain who had helped them out when they were stranded on Vancouver Island. The town was platted in 1847 by Major John Cady and Captain James Cook while they were exploring the Columbia River. In 1850 it became the county seat of Washington County and retained that title until 1907 when it becamePortland's second city. At its peak, Lakewood had a population of 30,000 people in 1940 and 60,000 people by 1970; however it has since declined significantly with only 8,000 residents living in 1990. According to some historians, what are now downtown Lakewood originated as an Indian village known as Wapatoochee which sat on high ground overlooking various streams near present day Interstate 5 and State Route 99A (now Yigo Road). The first white settlers arrived at Wapatoochee around 1800; however most likely there was no permanent settlement until 1820 when Captain David Sibley built a log cabin on high ground east of town in what is now Downtown Lakewood for his wife Sarah Jane Sibley. In 1830 Captain William Trollope landed at Port Discovery about three miles northwest of Wapatoochee with his brother John Trollope and their families After spending several weeks exploring this virgin land they located a spot where they constructed a small boat dock/embarkation point for traders travelling up the Columbia River between Portland and Seattle Prior to this place being developed into what is today Downtown Lakewood there was no such thing as vehicular traffic or even Anchorage terms like stoplight we drove down one side street then turned off & walked another blocks up to get food or go shopping There wasn't even snow tires back then so going 4x4x100 yards would've been pretty easy These days you can drive right up to those old buildings without any problem but back then you needed all your strength&courage because if you got stuck you might have died trying To get out you had to use both hands Which didn't make life much easier For many years Huckleberry Finn stayed close by wading across Tryon Creek & getting him water Carlson's Pharmacy building still stands next door today Huckleberry Finn did that trick because he couldn't swim So if he got stuck he'd have had to wait till morning & try again If That happens today I'm going paddle over & help You Out
