Lakewood is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 26,521 at the 2010 census. Lakewood is part of the Seattle–Tacoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Lakewood was made up of dirt foundations and chickens during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1908. A post office called Old Town was established in 1911, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1959. The townsite that makes up today's Lakewood was first settled by pioneers who came to the area for gold during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1908. They built a small cabin on an bend in the river where it empties into Puget Sound. During World War I, many American soldiers were stationed at Camp Nelson on nearby Mount Baker and they needed a place to stay while awaiting transport home from Europe. So, some men from Tacoma bought land near what is now Northgate Boulevard and built a primitive cabin named "Nelson". When word got out that there was gold near Nelson, more people started streaming into this new locale and soon there were enough buildings to support a Post Office and storeroom within weeks of its establishment. By 1916, residents had organized themselves into two factions – those who wanted to keep things traditional like electing their own Postmaster General (Pete Rose) as well as keeping their own stores – and those who wanted government regulation which would lead to better business practices among their brethrens In 1917 local forces helped quash any nascent rioting by one faction or another; however further unrest followed when regulations governing mining increased taxes without corresponding benefits for common citizens became known In 1939 Everett Kelleher donated land east of present day Lakeside Drive for municipal use; originally developed as an open-air swimming pool village called Shoreline Village he renamed it after his dog Shoreline which he imported from Japan The early 20th century saw heavy development with construction going on around every street corner with small businesses opening up including general stores such as J & W Grocery before Starbucks arrived along with other big name chains coming later . Many examples can be seen downtown such as Pioneer Place which features 4 different restaurants all operated by different family members over time .
