Lakewood is a census-designated place in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 7,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1892 by John A. Denny and James Fenton, who named it for nearby Lakewood Park on which they had built their home. The first post office opened in 1893 and the first school was opened in 1896. In 1903, the town became part of what would become Seattle when Tacoma incorporated as a city. In 1945, during World War II, Lakewood annexed neighboring Lynden because of its strategic location as an airfield for Boeing bombers flying to China. Lynden's residents were able to keep their homes during the war but when Japan surrendered, all remaining Japanese citizens were deported and all property within Lynden became US soil again: this annexation ended up reversing many of Seattle's anti-Japanese policies from before World War II (eastern Tacoma also annexed Lynden later that year). From 1947 until 1990 Lakewood functioned as a separate municipality with its own government and school system; however, due to demographic changes within King County over that period and growth in adjacent Redmond (which then merged intoSeattle),Lakewood gradually lost its autonomy until it attained full independence on July 1st 1990 under name "Lakewood", after incorporation into King County only two years earlier as a result of merger between Redmond and Seattle communities east of Everett Quarry Road/Route 99W/Upper Rainier Valley Boulevard/ eventually Pierce county community south of I-5 southward including Bellevue
