Lake Stevens, Washington is a census-designated place located in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,813 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Lake Stevens" was given to the area by General George Custer and his men during their retreat from Fort Laramie after they were defeated by Sioux rebels on July 8, 1876. This battle took place near present-day Cheneyville. The first permanent settler in what became Lake Stevens was Captain John Goodrich of Tacoma who built a log cabin in 1879. Hardship forced him to abandon his cabin but he left behind valuable artifacts such as a flintlock rifle which has been preserved at the Pierce County Museum in Tacoma since 1902. A post office called Goodrichsville was established in 1880, and remained in operation until 1910. The community gradually grew around this post office and started to accept mail from nearby towns like Everett and Bothell. In 1903, the name changed to Lake Stevens because of its resemblance to a large body of water seen from ships on Puget Sound. In 1907, Consolidation occurred across Puget Sound which led to increased shipping traffic through Lake Stevens making it necessary for more establishments including a store and phone booth along with an army surplus store that served troops stationed at Fort Lawton on neighboring Padden Peninsula until 1959 when it closed down due to economic reasons. In 1912, an airport was opened up next door to the Army surplus store; however it only served commercial flights and never saw passenger traffic againuntil 1991 when it reopened as Terminal 2nd Ave Airport following renovation projects that included new boarding platforms for luggage cars and expanded taxiways capable of handling larger jets And much more! In 1941 when World War II began most people had evacuated or were already gone so there wasn't much activity until 1945 when about 120 houses were destroyed by fire caused by faulty wiring inside an ammunition depot used by soldiers training at Ft Lewis National Monument before being razed thanks partly to donations from local farmers who had grown crops nearby during World War II! A few years later another post office called Anacortes opened up just east of Terminal 1st Ave Airport after construction began on an expressway connecting Everett with Tacoma via Interstate 5! That same year also saw the opening up of Waterfront Park which lies today between Terminal 1st Ave Airport & terminals 2nd Ave & 3rd Ave airports adding some much needed recreational amenities missing from earlier parts of town! Today Lake Stevens holds many events throughout the year both big & small climaxing annually with its annual Oktoberfest celebrations held over Labor Day Weekend!

In 1898, when Congress passed an act authorizing construction of a national park around Puget Sound, Lake Stevens was one of five lakes added to that park. The park has been very popular with visitors since it was established and today it contains over 400 campsites and RV parks as well as interesting Shrine Park containing evidence from ancient Native American settlements dating back to 5500 BC. With its large surface area and diverse ecology, Lake Stevens offers plenty for both recreational anglers and scientific researchers looking for clues about climate change or salmon migration patterns.
