In the early 1800s, Lake Stevens was a small trading post and fishing village located in present-day Washington state. The area now known as Lake Stevens was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. The first European to visit the area was Captain James Cook in 1792, who named it New Holland after his homeland of Holland. By 1824, the town of Lake Stevens had been founded and developed around a wharf on the eastern shore of the lake. In 1847, when Congress passed the Indian Removal Act, which forced all Native American tribes living east of the Columbia River to relocate to Oklahoma or else be destroyed, most of these tribes' lands were given to Lake Stevens. The town continued to grow until it reached its peak in 1931 when there were over 50 businesses and 2,000 residents. However, by World War II,Lake Stevens had shrunk to just 10 businesses and 100 residents due to wartime restrictions on lumber production. However, since then (and especially during recent years),the community has seen an resurgence with growth in both business and population. In 2013,the town annexed nearby Springdale which gave it a total population of over 200 people. During this time period many new businesses have opened up including two breweries (Onearcade Brewery and Springdale Brewing) as well as several restaurants/cafes/bars/hobby stores along with three new schools (K–12th grades).
Lake Stevens is a large, private body of water located in the Olympic National Park of Washington. Lake Stevens is a census-designated place in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,827 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The name Lake Stevens was given to the body of water by Colonel George Vancouver in 1792 in honor of his friend and fellow Scottish explorer Alexander Selkirk. The first permanent European settlement at what is now Lake Stevens was made by fur traders under Captain Robert Grayling in 1824. In 1851, the town site was platted and named after General James K." Mercer, who had come from Canada with General Steuart during the Mexican War. A post office called Lake Stevens opened in 1854, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. The township formed from parts of Kitsap County on January 3, 1909 following a referendum vote by residents. As a result of its incorporation into King County on February 2 that year, Lake Stevens became an unincorporated community within King County without any governing body other than individual citizens themselves. On July 1, 1959 the Township achieved full countyhood with a referendum vote led by Mayor Harry Nourse Jr.. The community has since grown substantially with annexations from neighboring communities including South Bend and North Bend as well as growth within its own borders due to annexation efforts by local governments throughout King County over the years. Lake Stevens features many cultural attractions such as Mount Rainier National Park which can be seen from downtown; Pleiku Battlefield State Historic Site which contains significant examples of both American Revolutionary War battle tactics employed there; and Boeing’s factory complex located just south of town which produces airplanes for airlines all around the world including Air Asia
The first European to visit the area was Juan de la Cosa in 1692. The first permanent European settlement was on the site of present-day Tacoma in 1792. The town, then called Tukwila, grew rapidly and by 1854 had a population of over 100 people. In 1861, Tacoma became an incorporated city and by 1871 had a population of over 1,000 people. On January 15, 1888, Tacoma's charter as an independent city was revoked due to lack of funding and it reverted to its original name of Tukwila.
