By 1870, the town had developed into a fashionable resort for wealthy farmers and their families from Tacoma, Olympia, and Bellevue. The influx of white people during World War II caused some social changes within the town. Most notably, women gainedthe right to vote in 1946; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of modern day Lake Stevens politics. In 1949, construction began on what would become one of America's most famous education institutions - Mountlake Terrace School - which helped spark growth within the community after years of planning and fundraising by local boosters including Mayor Harry Morse and School Board member Mrs. Lillian Waldorf Goodyear. By 1970, Lake Stevens had reached its peak as a popular tourist destination with nearly 2 million visitors annually who enjoyed its natural beauty as well as its many attractions such as golf courses (including two owned by Nike), tennis courts (including one belonging to Microsoft), lakeside restaurants/bars/lodges, art galleries (including one designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe), shops with unique items from around the world (including a replica Indiana Jones temple built by Jony Ive),and Convention Center which hosted several popular events over the years such as outdoor concerts by Nirvana or U2
