There are also two churches - First Presbyterian and Methodist - and a number of businesses including two grocery stores, three restaurants, four banks and two bowling alleys.

The first Europeans to reach the area that is now known as Washington were French and Spanish traders in the mid-16th century. The first permanent European settlers in what would become Washington Territory were George Vancouver and his group of fur trappers who traveled through the region in 1792. In 1853, Congress passed the Kansas–Nebraska Act, which recognizing the eastern border of Nebraska and Kansas was much disputed. As a result, many people from Nebraska moved into southwestern Washington Territory to try to claim land east of the Missouri River. In 1861, when America became involved in the Civil War, most of northwestern Washington Territory sided with Confederate forces over Union troops. After the war ended, many people from northwest Washington Territory decided to move back into their original areas because they felt that their original land had been taken away from them by government action. This resettlement process continued until 1937 when all but 8 percent of northwest Washington Territorial residents left for good due to population growth within Utah and other westward expansion states during this time period.
