Lake Stevens is a small, rural town in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 702 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. The name Lake Stevens comes from the local Indian word "thurston" meaning "a small stream." The first settler in what is now Thurston County was George Aitken and his brother James Aitken, who arrived in 1855. In 1861, John Wesley Smith and Ethan Allen established a log cabin on the present site of Lake Stevens. In 1922, it became part of King County and was incorporated as a village. In 1954 it merged with nearby Everett to form an enlarged Lake Stevens Village which has since shrunk back to its original size due to economic hardships. On July 20, 1907, members of the Wenatchee Tribe met at Stevenson's Cabin on Islip Creek for a conference about land claims surrounding their reservation east of Seattle. They decided that they would build a new village on the same spot where they had been meeting for years before any action was taken about developing this land. This decision led to future problems because it would be difficult for farmers living near Seattle to get food production licenses despite being located on tribal lands; this resulted in many people moving out into Everett when Lake Stevens Village formed because they could not get work or live close by without fear of expulsion from their homes or arrest if caught farming within city limits. In 1865, during the American Civil War, the island was taken over by Confederate forces who used it as a base from which to launch attacks against Union positions on Puget Sound
