Lake Stevens is a small, rural community in Thurston County, Washington, United States. It lies on the eastern shore of Lake Stevens and is bordered by the communities of Anacortes to the south and Issaquah to the north. The community was founded in 1892 by men from Anacortes and Issaquah as part of a land grant given to them by Governor James K. Polk. It was incorporated as an unincorporated community in 1912. In 1955 it became a town. The population was 583 at the 2010 census. The name "Lake Stevens" comes from an Indian word meaning "lake where trout swim." The first settlers found land around present-day Lake Stevens after canoeing down stream from Mount Olympus, which dominates the landscape to the east. They named their new settlement for George Washington and his army who fought in America's war for independence; this is also why there are several historical markers located in towns like Anacortes and Issaquah that commemorate this event such as Mount Vernon Cemetery (site of General Washington's funeral). The area around present-day Lake Stevens was filled with forest until white man began settling hereabouts about 1892 following gold discoveries near Seattle. Men from Anacortes, Issaquah, Auburn and other nearby villages traveled upriver each day on flatboats carrying goods up river to Tacoma so they could be unloaded at night before continuing on downstream to sell their findings at local marketplaces or trade goods with Native Americans living along Puget Sound who had access to these waters through treaties made between indigenous people and various governments over time. This activity greatly accelerated when railwayroads were built running parallel through much of Puget Sound creating what would later become known as “the opening” – enabling easy transportation of goods all across North America without having to go through points westward like Clarkesville or Olympia where transportation costs were prohibitively high. This period during which businesses flourished within close proximity of one another is often called “Lake Stevens” history because many key milestones occurred here including: founding of Tacoma Municipal Court (1894), establishment of King County Courthouse (1912), incorporation of Lake Stevens into Thurston County (1912), construction/purchase/operation of numerous churches throughout Pierceland Valley during this time including First Baptist Church erected in 1924 (!), creation/establishment (1955) Of Town Hall which currently houses government services such as Courts & voter rolls etc., etc… Today, many residents continue their agricultural pursuits such as raising cattle, pigs and chickens; harvesting applesauce or potatoes; growing vegetables or fruits; fishing for bass & crappie; trapping deer & bear etc.; while others commute daily into larger metropolitan areas for jobsites or services provided by businesses located just outside town limits like Tacoma or Bellevue WA.. Many residents still maintain strong ties with their village roots - attending church every Sunday morning together sincereek after dinner - farming produce at home weekly Sabbath afternoon feast together using raised beds/ gardens insteadof using outdoor kitchens due evenings being too cold outdoors
The first Europeans to visit the area were sailors in 1692, when they sighted a small island in the lake. The first permanent European settlement was founded by the Spanish in 1793. The British also explored and mapped the area but never permanently settled. In 1855, Lake Stevens became part of Washington Territory. In 1912, it became a state of the United States.
