Lake Stevens is a small, isolated community located in Thurston County, Washington. The population was 1,887 at the 2000 census. It is part of the nearby town of Lake Stevens and is situated on the shores of Long Lake. The first Europeans to visit the area were Jesuit missionaries who arrived in 1792. They built a small chapel here about 1810 and named it Saint John's Chapel after John Baptist, one of their number. In 1851, when King George III donated land for the town center, Saint John's Chapel became Lakeside Hall. In 1907, two brothers named Harry and Frank Olson bought some land near the town line and began development of what would become Lake Stevens. They named their property " Olson Place" in memory of their parents- Harry (1884-1966) and Olga Olson (1887-1964). TheOlson family continued to live here until 1925 when they sold all their property to Thurston County for $5,000. The first post office was established at Lakeside Hall in 1907. It was called "Moses Landing" because Moses Askew had collected logs there during his explorations around that time. The name changed to "Lake Stevens" in 1941 due to local support for creating a new county name based on popular demand within the community itself as well as by postal officials ruling that existing county names did not always reflect accurately those living within them geographically or socially. It wasn't until 1959 that an automated mail system replaced human operators at Lakeside Hall so residents could now receive mail from anywhere within Thurston County without having to leave their homes - an important step in increasing access to communication among rural residents across rural Thurston County during this period of rapid growth throughout much of Western Washington state! In 1977/1978 mail service was discontinued from Lakeside Halls end point due to lack of funds but continues today via satellite link only!
