In 1984, lakefront property adjacent to CenturyLink Field were acquired for $17 million by the county of King County to create what would become known as "Seattle's most beautiful park". The park has since been expanded to include more than , containing over 2,500 acres (1,000 hectares) of open space including two large lakes - Union Bay and Lake Washington - as well as several smaller ones including Stickney Pond and Old School Cemetery on site of an earlier cemetery which had been destroyed during construction of Interstate 5 . In addition to providing recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike, the park also provides environmental education experiences for school children aged 6-12 years old English language immersion programs called " waterfront talks" on various aspects of water management ecology
