The site of what is now Lake Forest Park was first settled by Native Americans in the late 17th century. In 1851, the town of Lake forest was founded on land that had been donated to it by General George Stephenson. The name "Lake Forest" originated from this donation and also because it was then one of two communities in King County with more than 10,000 residents (the other beingSeattle). In 1912, when Seattle became an independent city, Lake Forest Park became its second municipality and only incorporated village until 1959 when it annexed parts of SeaTac and Bothell. In 1957, community leaders decided to rename their new town after Eleanor Roosevelt because she had become an American icon during her time as First Lady of the United States. She would have been 92 years old at the time. On July 1st of that year, Lake Forest Park became Eleanor Roosevelt Township and continued to be so until 1974 when it changed back to its original name for historical accuracy reasons. On November 2nd 1978 voters passing a referendum approved annexing Unincorporated townships into City government which included all but three (Unincorporated Green Lake Township annexation went through on October 15th 1978), making Lake Forest Park a full-time city under state law effective January 1st 1979 The annexation made total population increase from 3200 people to over 56k within seven years! This unprecedented growth led directly to many new businesses opening up in what had once been a sleepy rural town; such as Amazon Web Services Headquarters – located today just east of downtown on Jackson Street - opened its doors in 2001 as part of Microsoft’s purchase of Republic Wireless!. Today, there are over 100 businesses open inside or near downtown including Starbucks Coffee Company/Red Robin Burgers & Fries restaurant/Applebees restaurant/Northeast Lumber Yard Grocery store/Southeast Lumber Yard Grocery store etc., anchor stores like Safeway grocery store were built along Jackson St., . . . And finally our newest development – Everett Steelhead Lodge – homebuilt exclusively for fishing enthusiasts who appreciate pristine water quality right off I-5!
