Lake Forest Park, Washington is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 27,996 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the United States and home to two-thirds of the country's Native American population. The first European settlers in what is now Lake Forest Park were Dutchmen who arrived during the 16th century. They named their new land "Wapato", after an Indian chief they had killed. The area that would become Lake Forest Park was originally part of Snohomish County, but was annexed by King County in 1907. As Lake Forest Park grew, so did its knife industry. In 1918, entrepreneur Harry Burch started a small grocery store on State Street in downtown Lake Forest Park and soon began selling knives made from Japanese steel and other materials imported from Japan. By 1921, Burch had built a large knife factory on Northeast 82nd Avenue near Snohomish University; his products became nationally known and were sold through stores such as Sears Roebuck and JCPenney until production ceased in 2006. Today, knife Manufacturing has resumed with a new company called Knife Works located just outside of town on Circle Drive NW (just off I-5). This company specializes exclusively in making custom knives for specific customer needs and desires - today there are few if any larger knife manufacturers left in this niche market! Knife Works produces some seriously beautiful knives each day - it's hard not to get excited about something like that!
