In 1865, John Ferris built his sawmill on current day Alki Point Road just west of today's intersection with State Route 99E – one mile east-northeast along Puget Sound shoreline then inland through sandbars towards Elliott Bay before reaching Puget Sound again In 1868, two years after Stevensons landed in present day Everett they erected a wooden cabin next door to their sawmill for $30 per year rent from John Whitehead (the man who later donated land for Everett's first school). The following year they hired an Indian named Blackwater as their supervisor and he began clearing land for farming including rights to mill water which he sold downstream to settlers for use at their mills – this original settler village eventually grew into today’s townsquare .
