In 1887, Dr. George Ripley purchased land east of Lake Union from Jens Jacobsen for $1 million in order to create a park that would serve as a playground for his expanding family of physicians when they moved from Norway to Seattle following the death of their father in 1876. The original site chosen for the park consisted only of two small parcels – one measuring just over two acres (0 hectare). To make room for future expansion, Drs.
