The first people to live in what is now Lacey were Native Americans who hunted and gathered food near present-day Yacogdoche Lake. In 1847, Aldermen Wm. Haggerty and John Hill built a log cabin in what is now Lacey on land owned by Nicholas Goodyear. Goodyear was a fur trader from Seattle who had settled in Puget Sound area around 1825. He traded goods with Indians along the Skagit River and he also founded Nisqually Landing on Puget Sound about 1827 as a trading post for his Indian customers. In 1865, George Stephenson built the Northwestern Pacific Railroad through what is today Lacey on land that he bought from Goodyear. The railroad helped to spur development in remote areas of Skagit County including Lacey which began to come alive with settlers in the late 1800s when logging became an important industry thereabouts. By 1905 there were over 100 businesses operating hereabouts including several banks and stores as well as restaurants, churches and hotels catering to travelers arriving via train or boat along Interstate 5 from Tacoma or PortlandErnest Hemingway made his movie "The Sun Also Rises" here while visiting nearby White Salmon during its heyday between 1915-1920; Hollywood came calling again! During World War II many members of local military service served at various locations across America such as Camp Pendleton (1941-1945), Naples Harbor (1943) and Iwo Jima (1944). After hostilities ended many residents returned home but some continued living off farm until they sold their land at auction in 1949 then moved into housing developments scattered throughout central Skagit County until becoming fully integrated into urban areas by 1990 when Interstate 5 bypassed town limits altogether leaving only a few remaining outlying farms surrounded by city center sprawl aimed largely at manufactured jobs rather than traditional subsistence agriculture fueled by natural resources including timber production A variety of cultural festivals have been held throughout different parts ofSkagit Valley annually attracting visitors from all overthe world since 1975 notably culminating with our annual Oktoberfest celebration which draws thousands every year!

Lacey was platted in 1887 by brothers Charles and John Lacey. The town's name comes from an abortive gold candidacy for Lacey in the 1888 U.S. presidential election as candidate of the Republican Party (lacking funds). The post office was named for Lacey until 1901; it then became known as "Baker". In 1902, Baker merged with neighboring towns of Auburn and Issaquah to form the new town of Lacey-Auburn-Issaquah. In 1907, Baker merged with another smalltown, Maple Valley, to form the new town of Maple Valley-Baker. In 1911, Baker merged with what are now parts of Olympia and Bellevue to become one municipality called Lacey-Olympia-Bellevue. On July 15, 1912, all but two blocks of downtown were destroyed by a fire that burned for four days; it is still considered one of Puget Sound's worst natural disasters. On January 9, 1913*, Lacey incorporation took place under state law due to a dispute between residents over water rights near Lake Union. That same year saw the opening of the first grocery store in what is now downtown: J & B Grocery Co., operated by James Dickey and his brother Sam*Dickey*. For much of its history *Lasley had no school*, serving only local farm families until after World War II when schools began to open up throughout Thurston County *. During this time there were occasional attempts made at developing a city center which never came close to fruition*.
