Lacey is one of the oldest communities in Washington and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over hundred years. In 1855, Lacey was chosen as the location for what would become the University ofWashington. The townspeople were so supportive of the new school that they continue to support it to this day. The first settler in Lacey was John Wideman, who arrived in 1810. He built his house on land that now includes part of Main Street. Wideman’s wife, Mary Jane, later married Andrew Oswald and moved to Lacey with him in 1812. They settled on a farm that became known as Oswald’s Landing. After a few years, they decided to move back to Seattle because their children had outgrown school there. In 1814, James Hays founded Hays Station on the Columbia River opposite present-day Lacey. It was here that he began trading goods with European traders and collected data about river traffic and climate conditions from his voyages downriver.. In 1826, he sold his interest in Hays Station and moved his family across the river to start their own trading post at Nisqually Landing where they continued trading until 1861 when Oregon became a United States territory which ended Indian trade along the Columbia River
Lacey was founded in 1881 by wagonloads of settlers who traveled from the nearby town of Wenatchee. The town rapidly grew and soon became a popular watering hole for farmers, ranchers, and hunters. In 1915, Lacey was named after its first postmaster, Nathan Lacey.
