Lacey is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,636 at the 2010 census. Lacey is located on the eastern border of King County and is bordered to the south by Seattle and to the north by Olympia. The town has a mix of residents from all over King County with some people from as far away as Everett and Bainbridge Island. Lacey was first settled in 1853 by John Bemis, who named it for his wife Lacee (local name for "a small cedar" or "cedar tree"). In 1855 the town was platted and named after General George A. Custer's regiment which had fought at Little Big Horn during the Mexican-American War. The post office was established in 1857, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first school in Lacey opened on February 15, 1865 when nine students were enrolled in what became known as First School No. 1. After three years of construction funded by subscription, First School No. 2 opened on June 5th of that year with 30 students and became one of the most successful schools in Lacey history with its well-maintained buildings still standing today! On November 7th 1870 Second School No. 1 also opened with 10 students after $3 raised from local businesses helped fund its construction! It too became one of Lacey’s most popular schools serving grades K-8 until 1924 when it closed due to financial reasons; however restoration efforts have made it open again since then! In 1923 Third School No 1 also opened with 10 students after $3 raised from local businesses helped fund its construction! Unfortunately this school closed soon thereafter due to vandalism but reopened under new management later that same year! Finally Fourth & Fifth Schools Nos1 & 2 both opened in 1928 each having 20 students each! However these schools closed within 6 months due to lack of enrollment so they too are open now enjoying centuries long success story like their predecessors before them! In 1951 an addition to Lacey was annexed into Seattle making it one municipality along side Bellevue/Kent Link Road which at that time numbered 9 “towns” totaling a population over 100 thousand people!!! This move led directly to much discussion about whether or not annexing smaller towns into larger municipalities would be beneficial or detrimental for many reasons including increased Taxes collected by municipalities while losing certain services such as fire protection etc., but ultimately no change occurred aside from slightly more accurate street addresses being given so there may be some benefit overall though nothing can be said for sure!! larry Petersen built his home on Main Street just east of Second Street back around 1957 which remains today !
