For many years, Lacey thrived as an agricultural center due to its fertile land and good water supply. In 1907, however, when the federal government took over Indian Affairs in Central America and started sending American Indians there instead of helping them development their own economies, Lacey began to decline. By 1910 it had shrunk to just 335 residents. But things changed when Nelson Alder became mayor of Wenatchee in 2003 and decided to make Lacey an important part of his city's revitalization plan. Alder put together a team of local developers and entrepreneurs who were willing to invest in new businesses and create jobs for locals. This strategy worked; by 2006 Lacey had recovered enough so that it could once again become an active community hub with annual events like its annual Pumpkin Festival and International Folklore Festival (formerly known as Salty Springs Folklife Festival). Today, though much smaller than it used to be – ranking only sixth among Central Washington towns in population – Lacey still has a lot going for it: beautiful properties along the Snake River; excellent schools; friendly people; great restaurants; plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities; etc., all while staying connected through its website (www.lacksonvilleaievaiaiowa.).
