Lacey is a town in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. Lacey is originally named "Lavery" and was platted in 1872 by James H. Ayer. In 1902, it was renamed after Linnie Mae"[1] who lived there until her death in 1978. The first settlers to Lacey were George Witherspoon and his wife Fannie Willingham[2]. They arrived on July 4, 1872, from Canterbury, England with their two children three days later on the ferryboat Pigeon.[3][4] The community was established around a logging camp started by Captain John Brownell and his brother-in-law Daniel Snyders which had been set up about five miles east of present-day Lacey on State Route 9A (later Highway 99).[5] By 1880, logging had stopped completely so that there were only a few homes left in Lacey when the U.S. Census Bureau reported its population for that year to be 1,711 people:[6][7][8] In 1902,[9][10] Lacey's name changed to honor American Helen Keller after she became an international symbol of education during an nationwide campaign against illiteracy led by President Theodore Roosevelt beginning in 1901 (see also America's First Lady). Helen Keller attended school here before going on to become one of America's most famous speakers and author; her autobiography told her story from birth until her death in 1942 aged 89 years old while living in Atlanta following a six-year stay at Brody School near Providence RI where she graduated as valedictorian with honors[11]. Lacey was named after the Lacey family, who were land speculators in the area. The name may have been inspired by a nearby lake, which was also called Lacey. In 1855, the town of Lacey was platted and it became an incorporated town on January 1, 1856. The first post office was opened in Lacey on March 3, 1858. On February 17, 1861, Lacey had its first incorporation as a city with a population of fifty-six people. On October 15, 1870, Lacey had its second incorporation as a city with a population of one thousand five hundred people. In 1886, Lacey had its third incorporation as a city with a population of two thousand four hundred people. In 1915, the City of Seattle annexed much of what is now Lacey into its boundaries making it an entirely new city with a population of six thousand people
