Lacey, Washington is a small town in the Yakima River Valley of southeastern Washington. It was founded by ferry operators in 1874 as Okanogan Ferry Landing. The first store opened in 1875 and the first post office in 1877. Lacey's growth was slow until World War II when it exploded with population growth due to the growing use of munitions manufacturing plants in nearby Lakewood and other towns. The Lacey Arsenal was established on October 1, 1918 by US Army Captain John S. Fuller and General Electric Company president James Paine to produce artillery shells for World War I. The plant employed over 2,000 workers at its peak and produced more than 3 million rounds of ammunition during the war. After the war, many of the plant's employees moved away to join American industry but some continued working at the arsenal until it closed in 1957. In 1958, local residents referendum voted to keep the arsenal open as a museum and community center. In 1990, Lacey became an unincorporated census-designated place (CDP) within Thurston County. The arsenal reopened as a museum on July 15, 1992 after renovations costing $2 million were completed; it is now one of only two remaining arsenals left standing in Washington state with its original structure intact from 1918-1957. Lacey is located on the north shore of Puget Sound and is part of the Olympia metropolitan area. Lacey's economy revolves around fishing and boatbuilding. The town has two churches, one Jehovah's Witnesses and one Pentecostal; a post office; a bank; four schools (grades K-8); a health clinic; and three businesses: an auto mechanic, a restaurant, and a loan company. The Lacey Volunteer Fire Department has jurisdiction over all Rural fire departments in Thurston County including Lacey. Lacey was founded in 1892 by Mrs. Anna Phelps as "Lacrosse." It changed its name to "Lacrosse" in 1924 when the post office moved to Lacrosse from nearby Yelm and it adopted its present name in 1927 after Mrs. Anna Phelps' death. In 1940 the school system was organized with nine grades: kindergarten through eighth grade; then high school until 1959 when it became an eighth grade academy with twelve grades split into two years: ninth through eleventh grade (then continuation high school) then twelfth grade (now college preparatory). In 1969 lacrosse began sponsoring girls' varsity soccer which continues today as the co-ed side of lacrosse for both boys and girls

Lacey was founded by the Lacey brothers in 1887 as a logging and fishing village. In 1911, Lacey became an incorporated town with a population of about 100. The town experienced prosperity during the early twentieth century thanks to its successful lumber industry and its location at the head of Puget Sound. However, during World War II, Lacey was overwhelmed by the influx of Japanese Americans into the area and its economy stagnated. However, since then, Lacey has seen significant growth thanks to its attractions such as its beautiful lakeshore community and its growing tourist industry. Today, Lacey is home to many businesses and residences that provide important economic stability to the community.
