Kirkland, Washington is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 26,872 at the 2010 census. The name of the city comes from the land grant given to James Kirkland by George Coeur d'Alene in 1854. Kirkland was founded as a town in 1884 by volcanic blast victims who were seeking relief from their disease-ridden home country. In 1912 it merged with neighboring Spokane to become one of the original five cities in King County. In 1978 it became an independent municipality when its boundaries changed due to annexation by neighbouring Bellevue. In 2012 it restored its original name of Kirkland after a referendum vote which rejected proposed changes to its governance structure that would have made it a city again. The first buildings in Kirkland were log cabins built on hills overlooking Lake Washington and the surrounding countryside. By 1840 the area had been surveyed and named for General James Kirtland, who had led American forces during the Mexican War and then served as Governor of Oregon Territory (1846-48). In 1854, George Coeur d'Alene awarded Kirkland to James Kirkland for his services during the Klondike Gold Rush; this gift helped make Kirkland one of America's most rapidly growing towns during its early years. In 1912, when other nearby communities amalgamated into Seattle, Kirkland remained an isolated outpost with only 15 residents; but within two decades it had added 100 more inhabitants through annexations from other villages and townships in King County. Today, KirkLAND boasts over 260 businesses representing all manner of industries including health care providers (+68), information technology (+27), restaurants (+27), engineering services (+4), publishing [+1], real estate (+5) and retail stores (+9). The first permanent white settlement in the area was on the site of present-day Kirkland, Washington, in 1792. The town was founded by Captain James Cook, who explored and charted the Northwest Coast. The first permanent European settler in what is now Kirkland was Nicholas Breyman, a Dutchman, who arrived in 1796. In 1851, gold was discovered at Gold Hill; the town began to grow rapidly as miners came to prospect for the mineral. By 1875, there were over 1,000 people living in Kirkland. Despite its growth, Kirkland never became a major city; instead it served as a commuter town for Seattle. However, during World War II it played an important role in supplying munitions to Seattle and other nearby towns.
