Kirkland is a town in the King County region of Washington, United States. The population was 5,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The town was organized in 1855 from portions of the city of Bellevue. Kirkland has been home to an agricultural center since before white settlers arrived in what is now King County, and it remains a major agricultural center today with soybeans, corn, wheat, dairy products and other crops being grown extensively. The first store in Kirkland opened on December 12th 1855 by Wm Henson and His Sons as a general store on First Avenue Northeast. In 1865 the first post office was established hereon by Jno Whitehead under the name "Bellevue." By 1900 most of what is now Kirkland had been developed with only a few small parcels remaining undeveloped. The main artery through town then was First Avenue Northeast which ran northwest/southeast from downtown to Summit Hill Road northeast to Interstate 575 (now just NE 56th Street). In 1935 construction began on I-5 for expansion into western Washington; this would soon become known as "the highway that saves democracy" due to its importance for bringing goods and people together along corridor during times of war or national emergency. The route followed present day 1st Ave NE from downtown Bellevue via Summit Hill Rd northeast to I-5 close to where it meets US 90W about 8 miles southeast near Sumner Park & Nisqually River Bridge – making Kirkland one stoplight away from Seattle proper! A new shopping mall called Forest Lake Mall opened adjacent to I-5 southbound Exit 9 in 1990 replacing nearby Maple Leaf Shopping Center which closed its doors after 30 years due various financial issues including charges associated with noisy mall operations which led many customers fleeing onto I-5 instead) but also contributing significantly to increased traffic volumes on exit 9 (and leading directly into Boeing Field). In recent years numerous small businesses have closed up shop due various economic conditions while large box stores continue expanding unchecked like Macy's / Sears / Kmart etc., all within easy walking distance of Interstate 575 & State Route 206 interchange becoming ever more congested each time there's an open sale or holiday season! It wasn't until late 2007 when Microsoft announced plans for their much anticipated new campus adjacent SR 206 just east of Forest Lake Mall - worsening congestion already caused by hundreds if not thousands additional vehicles passing through every day! As projects continue apace like this we can likely expect even more jams & backups as well as environmental degradation taking place right alongside our increasingly expensive infrastructure – all without any real action being taken towards mitigating these impacts!
The first permanent European settlers in the area were French and Indian traders who landed on Juan de Fuca Peninsula in 1792. The area was part of the Columbia District of Washington Territory until 1848, when it became part of the newly formed United States. The first white settler in Kirkland was George A. Smith, who arrived in 1851. In 1853, a post office was established at Kirkland, and remained in operation until 1959.
