When the first settlers arrived in Kirkland, Washington in 1853, they were quickly met with hostility from the local Native American population. The indigenous people did not want to share their land with European newcomers, and so they began fighting and killing the newcomers. In order to survive, the settlers needed to protect themselves from these deadly attacks. One of the earliest methods that the settlers used to defend themselves was using shooting earmuffs. These earmuffs were made out of cloth or leather and hung around one's neck in order to reduce sound noise levels so that attackers would not be able to hear them. The Earmuff Company was founded in Kirkland in 1867 by John Sutter and James Townsend. The Earmuff Company was responsible for making a wide variety of shooting earmuffs including protection for soldiers during World War I, as well as other purposes such as safety for workers at factories or mines. Over time, new types of earmuffs have been developed which have helped make shooting more comfortable for both shooters and non-shooters alike. Kirkland is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 21,868 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in King County after Seattle. Kirkland's history dates back to 1851 when it was founded as a town in the east end of what is now Kirkland Lake. The name "Kirkland" may be from an Indian word meaning "place of plenty." The first permanent settler in what is now Kirkland was George Wright and his family who arrived on a boat on January 10, 1851. They were the first white settlers in what became today Kirkland. Wright farmed and raised chickens until he decided to open a store for goods at the mouth of Hwy 97 on July 1, 1853 which became the first business in town. In 1856, fur trader Elisha Denny opened a store and post office here also which soon became one of the most important businesses in town. By 1870, there were nine businesses operating in town with over fifty residents. In 1916, Mayor Harry Lewis donated land to make way for an airport which would serve as the county's primary airport until 1962 when Boeing purchased it and began using it as their main facility northwest of Seattle. In 1926, condemnation proceedings were filed against two buildings that had been built without proper permits within sight of downtown Kirkland by developers who wanted to build luxury housing developments called Camelot Park & Country Club which never materialized but left behind a legacy of developer anger and bitterness that still influence local politics today! In 1949/1950 by then Mayor Charles Sorensen came up with plans for developing three blocks northeast of downtown along Hwy 97 into what would become known as Sorenson Square where many heavy industry plants such as Boeing moved into during this time including Roy Fairchild’s Kenmore Aircraft factory where they manufactured P-38 Lightning fighter planes before World War II started! This area has since been renamed CenturyLink Field after CenturyLink Inc., one of America's largest telecommunications companies whose headquarters are located there!

Kirkland, Washington is a small town in Thurston County, Washington. The population was 1,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Kirkland were fur traders in the 18th century. In 1853, George Vancouver explored and mapped the Strait of Juan de Fuca and named it for James Knox Kirkland, an American sailor who had been lost on that voyage. The town was established in 1861 by Territorial Governor Alfred Howe as a Sheep Station on Puget Sound. By 1870, the station had been abandoned and its buildings demolished; however, one remaining building from that time is still used as a library branch today: the old schoolhouse which served as both a grocery store and post office from 1861 to 1865 before becoming a sheriff's office from 1886 to 1889. In 1903, Kirkland became part of King County when it was organized through the merger of several adjacent townships into that county. The name change came about because at that time there were no other settlements within Thurston County with similar names (e.g., Bellevue or Tacoma). In 1907, new courthouse construction began in downtown Kirkland and continued until 1912 when it moved to nearby Discovery Hill; this courtroom remains one of only two built specifically for judicial use inKing County (the other being Seattle’s Royer Park Courthouse). Other notable courthouse features include large courtrooms with multiple judge chairs (still visible), original light fixtures made by Burgess & Hubbard (and still used today), flooring laid down specifically for grand jury proceedings (!), and plaster molding used throughout the building – all impressive examples of early 20th century engineering work! In 1915–16 architect Daniel Burnham designed additions including an opera house, nurses' quarters (now known as "the ladies lounge"), mental health clinic/hospital (later renamed Northwest High School), additional stores around Discovery Hill Road, artesian well located just east of town on land later donated by Hargrave Brothers Brewing Company" - History
The first Europeans to visit the area were the Spanish in 1792. The next year, British troops invaded and burned down the Whitman House which was then used as a trading post by the native people. Captain James K. Polk, who was then a United States Navy officer, discovered and explored this area in 1846 while on a military expedition. Polk's findings led to what is now known as Washington Territory being created from parts of Oregon and Nevada in February 1849.
