Kirkland, Washington is a small town in the Eastern Washington region of the United States. It is located on the eastern border of Yakima County and the western border of Clark County. The population was 5,236 at the 2010 census. The name Kirkland comes from an early post office called Kellingrad which was established in 1892. The history of Kirkland begins with settlers who began arriving in what is now Yakima County in 1875. By 1890, there were over 100 residents living in Kellingrad and nearby villages including Kimberly, Nachesville, and Evergreen. The first school was built in Kellingrad in 1892 and it served grades one through five until 1914 when a new school was built east of town. In 1915, Kirkland joined the Union Pacific Railroad as a station on its mainline between Seattle and Tacoma. During World War II, many businesses were closed due to wartime rationing but Kelingrad continued to operate successfully as a small town until 1951 when it became an incorporated city under state law. Prior to that time, it had been governed primarily by elected officials appointed by the mayor and Board of Aldermen with no power to make laws or regulate business operations directly. In 1984, Microsoft announced plans for a large campus near Kirkland which would have created thousands of jobs within minutes of completion; however, these plans never came to fruition because they were met with resistance from local residents who felt that their community would be destroyed if such an important company chose to locate there. In recent years, various smaller businesses have emerged around Kirkland thanks to its location close to Interstate 90 (the main transportation artery through Yakima County) as well as its easy access to both Oregon andWashington state highways

By 1920, it had reached its peak population with more than 2,000 residents. However, during World War II (1940-1945), Kirkland experienced significant decline due to wartime military activity and housing shortages. After the war ended in 1945, there were few new developments untilthe late 1990s when a large mixed-use project called The Lens developed along North Capitol Street downtown which has since attracted millions of dollars in investment from both private investors and foreign nationals
The first Europeans to come to Lewis and Clark's area were the British in 1792. The first permanent white settlers arrived in 1810. The town of Kirkland was founded in 1811, and it became a county seat in 1853. The county was named for General George A. Kirkland, who fought against Mexican forces during the Mexican-American War.
