The first permanent settler in Kirkland was Captain George Vancouver who landed on July 12, 1792 on what is now the north side of Elliott Bay and named it Nisqually Island after his father-in-law, Nisqually River. The city began as a farmstead on land that was donated by Capt. George Vancouver to the people of Kirkland in 1851. The first school opened in 1853 and the first post office opened in 1855. In 1870, the city became an incorporated town with a population of 40 settlers. growth continued through the 20th century with strong commercial and industrial sectors until recently when development has slowed or stopped altogether due to environmental concerns around water use and air quality issues
