Kirkland, Washington is a small town in the central Puget Sound area of Washington state. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lake Stevens–Bellevue metropolitan area. The name Kirkland comes from Squamish Chief Daller's farm on the north side of the lake where he and his family used to reside before moving to Bellevue in 1872. The first European settler in what is now Kirkland was George Mercer who arrived there in 1836 as an employee of Edward Stevenson. The first post office in Kirkland was established in 1851 and named for Captain John Kirkpatrick, a British officer then stationed at Fort Clifton on Puget Sound. The town became a county seat under Oregon Territory government when that territory was organized on January 14, 1861. In 1908, Alexander Graham Bell founded his experimental telephone company here and installed the first working phone line in Seattle. In 1916, telephone service became available to all residents through Everett Telephone Company which had been organized previous year by local businessmen interested in providing better service than offered by rival companies including those owned by Seattle's heavy industry interests such as Northrop Grumman and Boeing Airplane Company. A branch courthouse was built near downtown Kirkgate during World War II to handle court martial cases brought against military personnel living or working nearby; it no longer operates today but remains popular tourist attraction with its gift shop interior still preserved as part of the museum complex built around it (see below). In 1957, Interstate 5 bypassed Kirkland and Bellevue altogether when it was constructed concurrent with I-5 south from Seattle; Kirkland has since lost most if not all remaining commercial development along its once busy main street corridor. In recent years much emphasis has been placed upon developing agricultural products within walking distance of various retail areas such as Bellevue Farmer's Market & Bakery (www), Superior Lakeside Cooperative Grocery (www), King County Fisheries Supply Co., Inc.(www) and several home-based processing plants situated just outside town limits adjacent to major highways serving both Bellevue and Tacoma suburbs; these have helped revive some Downtown businesses long abandoned or without hope of revival following suburban growth over the last few decades while also creating new opportunities for job creation outside traditional commercial corridors

Kirkland, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 12,827 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1851 by George Kirkpatrick and his wife Martha. It was named for Captain James Kirkpatrick, who had come to the area as a fur trader in 1824. The first store in Kirkland opened in 1852 and the first post office opened in 1853. The first school was built in 1865 and the first garage opened in 1903. In 1906, the name of the town changed from Kirkland to Kenton after its incorporation into King County. Kirkland has been home to many businesses over the years including Microsoft Corporation (1956-present), PepsiCo (1996-2007), Amazon (1997-2018), and Apple Inc.[1] In 2018, Amazon announced it would be moving its corporate headquarters from Seattle to Austin, Texas[2]. This will leaveKenton as one of only two towns within King County that do not have an Amazon corporate HQ.[3] Kirkland is also home to Mount Vernon Cemetery which contains some of America's most famous graves such as George Washington and John Adams.

In 1851, Kirkland became a town under the Washington Territory. The town boundaries were adjusted in 1898 when it merged with neighboring Bellevue to form the new city of Seattle.
