The mill closed in 1922 but reopened as an ice cream parlor in 1952 In 1909, George Wittell opened his bakery on Ferry Street NE and soon began selling bread made from whole wheat flour brought over by Norwegian immigrants working on logging railways south of Seattle. By 1912, Wittell had become one of America’s leading bakers and introduced Danish bread to America. His shop became known as “The Danish Bakery” until it merged with another store chain in 1969 to form Safeway Bros., Incorporated. In 1916, word got around about a new grocery store being built near Interstates 95 and 405 NW called Safeway Supermarkets Incorporated (later Sams Club). A group of local businessmen pooled their resources to buy the store from Safeway Bros., Incorporated for $1 million (equivalent to $121 million USD today). At this time Kirkland had only 1 grocery store however this rapidly growing company soon outgrew its space and began construction on what would later become Safeway Center at 425 First Ave NE In 1957, Safeway Center was completed when Interstate 5 was drawn through town creating an area that is now known as Pioneer Square Kirkland has experienced many technological advances including two significant hospital openings: One in 1962 with Presbyterian Health System and one in 2000 with Harborview Medical Center Additionally, several large technology companies have headquartered here such as Microsoft Flight Simulator International/Microsoft Dynamics GP Finally, Samuel Goldwyn Pictures Corporation moved its filming studio from Vancouver to Kirkland beginning production of "catcher IN THE Rye" there beginning in 1978

The town was named after Captain James Kirk and his crew who had landed on the island in 1792. In 1854, the first school was built in the town and soon afterwards, a post office was established. The town grew rapidly and by 1870, it had a population of around 100 people. In 1884, the first hospital was built in the town and it soon became an important stop for patients travelling to Tacoma or Victoria. By 1912, Kirkland had developed into a large city with over 1,000 people living there. By 1920, it had reached its current size with over 5,000 people living there.
