Kirkland, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 9,546 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of King County and contains most of the downtown area of Kirkland. The name "Kirkland" comes from an Indian word meaning "place where trees grow." The first permanent settler in what is now Kirkland was James Kirkpatrick who arrived with his family in 1851. He named his new land after himself and built a small cabin on the lot he acquired from George Vancouver for $5. His son, John Prentice Kirkpatrick, also settled in this area and built several houses on Beacon Hill in 1857-1858. In 1872, James Aiken purchased the lands that make up today's Kirkland from Captain Jonathan Ferris for $3 million. He developed these acres into what we know today as downtown Kirkland with its largeacre retail center and numerous churches and other buildings including the first hospital in King County. In 1907, Jock Mahoney opened Mahoney's Department Store on Superior Street near present day Union Station – one of the largest department stores of its type ever built in America at that time. This store later became Macy's flagship store which remains open to this day. In 1924 Wm Fenton opened his restaurant chain called Fenton's Cafeteria at Ninth Avenue & Union Station which quickly became a major player in Seattle cuisine during that era. In 1929–30 Homer Hargrave constructed two brick hotels on Capitol Hill – The Hotel Washington (now part of Federal Plaza) and The Alaskan State Building (now part of Harborview Medical Center). These properties were eventually combined to form The Hyatt Regency Seattle which still operates today as a hotel near Safeco Field across First Avenue from CenturyLink Fieldugly Park North! Today there are over 100 businesses operating within walking distance or less of downtown Kirkland including many large employers such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Corp., Boeing Co., Starbucks Coffee Company*, KFC*, Costco Wholesale Inc.* etc.*; restaurants such as Benaroya Hall®, Pike Place Market®, Roy’s Chinese Kitchen* etc.; nightlife venues like Zanzibar nightclub* etc.; movie theaters like Regal Cinemas* etc.; arts institutions like Pacific Arts Institute* etc.; government offices such as Homeland Security Investigations**; and more! * All except Starbucks Coffee Company are located south central Bellevue */

Kirkland, Washington is a small town in the Cascades region of Western Washington. The population was 9,895 at the 2010 census. The town is named after George Kirkland, an investor who founded what is now Kirkland Mills in 1854. The original settlers were not from Kirkland but from nearby Issaquah. In 1855, George Kirkland donated land for a public school in what is now Kirkland. By 1870, there were over 100 residents in Kirkland. In 1907, local developer Samuel Morse donated land for a new shopping center which became known as "Morse Park." In 1928, when Interstate 5 was constructed through the arearoughly doubling its current sizethe town accepted an invitation to become one of its exit points. The population has grown steadily ever since with annexations from neighboring towns such as SeaTac and Auburn while also becoming home to various businesses such as Microsoft Research (now known as Microsoft HoloLens) and Amazon Web Services (AWS). Today, Kirkland remains a very active community with many cultural events happening throughout each year including arts festivals and summer concerts
The first settler in what is now Kirkland, Washington was James Whitman in 1828. The town was named after Captain George Vancouver, the British explorer who mapped and charted the area.
