The first Europeans to visit Kirkland were the French in 1804 and they named it La Conteville-sur-Elliott Bay after Jean-Baptiste Conte, captain of the ships Dupleix and Colbert. The British established a trading post here in 1825 before moving their post away to Everett in 1836. In 1861, the town was renamed for General John A. Kirkpatrick who had led Ulysses S Grant's Army of occupation during the American Civil War as Commanding General of Western Washington Territory

Its architectural treasures dating back to pioneer days are still visible throughout its downtown core – including some very unique examples of Second Empire architecture – while also featuring modern amenities such as sidewalk cafes, parks (including Olympic Peninsula's only skatepark), nightlife options (including several dive bars), arts programs (including two dozen music venues) and much more besides.
In 1871, Kirkland was the first town in Washington to be organized. It grew quickly due to the gold rush and became a thriving community with a population of around 350 people by 1881. The town had two schools and one post office. In 1906, Kirkland incorporated as a city, and it experienced rapid growth until World War II when it lost its status as an important regional center. After the war, the city struggled to keep up with the larger towns nearby, but has since regained some of its former prominence as a node in the Puget Sound region.
