As part of UP's divestiture program in 1984, all but 1/3 of NRR's trackage within city limits were sold to Puget Sound Ry & Suite Line Railroad subsidiary SR&L Industries Inc., which then abandoned most tracks within town limits over several years; this left only 2 miles (3 kilometers) of track remaining inside town limits as Oficina de la Marina moved into buildings on First Avenue SE between Third Street SE and Fourth Street SE between 1921-1925 In 1961–62 residents applied for incorporation as a townsite under territorial statute §5-606 RCW; this effort failed after opposition by businessman Melvin Jorgensen Sr., who had developed adjacent properties into an expansive 902-acre regional shopping mall called "Kirkland Center". On July 14, 1966 KOMO television aired an investigative report alleging widespread bribery by management at then- bankrupt TVX Broadcasting Corporation before its sale to Time Warner Cable plc.; Congress subsequently placed restrictions on media ownership within telecommunications conglomerates On October 7, 2006 Microsoft announced it would sell off its wireless division wireless spectrum licenses for $2 billion to Comcast Spectacor USA LLC; these licenses were later used by Verizon Wireless for their FiOS service On December 12, 2006 Microsoft announced it would merge Skype Technologies Incorporated with Microsoft Corporation effective January 1st 2007; this move created the world’s second largest software company after Google Inc. The millers were spellbinders with their spinning wheels and they used to have an annual show outdoors which included music and dance by localamateurs from all over Puget Sound and as far away as Olympia Fields outside of Tacoma. In 1857, James Smith opened a grocery store in what is now Kirkland Center mall that became one of the largest stores in the area until it closed its doors in 1967 due to competition from Safeway

Kirkwood, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as U.S. Attorney General under Andrew Johnson.
