Kirkland, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 21,034 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The name "Kirkland" was first given to the site by Captain James Kirk in 1879. The current name comes from the word "kirk," which means farmstead in Scots/English and is derived from the place name Kilwinning in Scotland. The town was founded on December 6, 1889 by George Wickersham and his father-in-law John Denny as a result of land grants they received from Governor Harry Stevens. In 1896 it changed its name to Kirkland after James A. Kirkpatrick who had represented King County in Congress since 1865 and also served as Mayor of Seattle from 1897 to 1899 and again from 1913 to 1917. The first store opened in 1909 at Fourth Avenue and South Street with Fenton Krantz as manager. That store closed in 1969 but reopened in 1977 with an expanded menu including groceries, hardware, and sporting goods under the new name of Kirkland Market Incorporated until it merged with Safeway Incorporated on October 1, 1998 On September 14, 1916 two women walking their dog were mauled by three white males while sunbathing on Mercer Island; one died from her injuries while another managed to get away but was apprehended within minutes by police Kirkland's annexation into King County took place on January 3rd 1907 . On that date all of what is now south central Bellevue became part of Kirkland when Bellevue Township Act No 907 passed between King County Commissioners John Ahern (left) and William Sennett (right). Kirkland, Washington is a small town in Pierce County, Washington. The population was 1,593 at the 2000 census. It is the most populous community in Pierce County and second most populous community overall after Seattle. Kirkland is bordered by Bothell to the north, Sumner to the east, Angleterre to the south, and Everett to the west. The first permanent settler in what became Kirkland was Hiram Stevens in 1851. In 1863 Captain Charles Willson King founded a ferryboat landing on Elliott Bay for travelers coming from Olympia and Bellevue. In 1897 he donated land to make up part of what would become Kirkland Village Park which still stands today as one of its many features. In 1907 Captain John Fetterman established a gristmill on Long Beach Creek which currently continues operation as Fetterman's Mill & Brewery . That same year also saw the founding of the first high school in Pierce County - Thurston High School . Thurston lasted until 1965 when it merged with Seattle Central High School . Throughout much of its history there were few if any industry outside agriculture that allowed for large numbers of people living near each other; this changed beginning around World War II when numerous military barracks were constructed throughout Pierce County and nearby communities such as Sumner and Everett attracted businesses that employed thousands of people directly or indirectly. This change has led to some significant changes within Kirkland since then including increased racial diversity (African Americans made up only 8% of the population in 1950 but 26% by 2010) as well as an increasein professional development opportunities for residents through various corporations such as Microsoft, Amazon, Boeing etc.. The growth associated with these developments has resulted in a number of new businesses opening up within Kirkland itself but especially along Elliot Bay where several startups have been located including RhythmCity Coffee Roasters (& later Zinfandel), Bodega Kitchen & Bar (formerly Just Desserts), The Wellness Center (the present day home of Dearborn Performance Hall) and more recently Sprinkles Cupcakes (& later Dunkin' Donuts). These companies have helped contribute greatly to both local economic development and cultural visibility for Kirkland which can be seen firsthand during events like South Sound arts fairs or even larger festivals like Tacoma's First Friday night market!
