In 1898, a fire destroyed most of the downtown business district, but it also created a new downtown area that is still popular today. In 1925, Kirkland became an incorporated town with a population of around 11,000 people. In 1959, the City Council decided to change its name to Seattle because of its proximity to Seattle (the original home of the town). On July 1, 1961, Seattle merged with Kirkland as part of a larger merger which also included all of King County and portions of Pierce County. Today there are more than 25 thousand people living in Kirkland including 6500 students at local universities and 4200 employees at local businesses.
The first Europeans to reach what is now Kirkland, Washington were the British in 1792. The area was part of the fur trade and was first explored by Captain George Vancouver in 1792 while exploring the Columbia River. He named the river's origin "Kirkland" after his home town of Kirkwall, Scotland. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Kirkland was a log cabin built by Nathaniel Jarvis Jr. on land acquired from the Yakama Nation in 1825. In 1847, John McLoughlin established a farmstead called McLoughlin's Station on the south bank of the Duwamish River near present-day Bellevue. In 1855, John Denny erected a sawmill and millrace within walking distance of his house at Bellevue for local logging and agricultural purposes. By 1860, most of modern-day Kirkland had been developed as a bedroom community for Seattleites living north of University Avenue between Elliott Bay and Lake Union.
