The city is located on the east bank of the Issaquah River and was founded by Hargrave Kirkland in 1851. It became a town in 1907 and has since grown to be one of the largest cities in King County. Kirkland is served by two public schools: Seattle-Tacoma School District #14 and Redmond School District #1. Kirkland's rich agricultural history goes back to when it was part of Snohomish County. In 1851, Hargrave Kirkland purchased about of land along the Issaquah River from Chief Joseph Snohomish for $6 per acre ($1014). He built what would become his first house on the site – called "The Old homestead". In 1853, he married Maria Lengeler and established a farmstead nearIssaquah Falls with six slaves. They had four children: Emma (1854-1917), Everett (1856-1934), John (1858-1937) and Charles Waugh (1860-1945). All but one of those children survived into adulthood; Everett died in infancy. By 1865, Hargrave Kirkland had developed what would become an important grain trade route through rural King County - transporting goods upriver to Tacoma via ferries on the Industrial Canal. In 1907, after years of discussion between Mayor Harry Condon and other leaders within the town government over issues such as prohibitionism and zoning changes that would have expanded business opportunities for businesses within town limits, voters approved a measure legalizing liquor sales throughout King County by referendum. The following year saw the opening of KFC's first restaurant in downtown Kirkland – becoming one of only two restaurants nationally open until that point! That decade also saw major advances for Kirkland as it gained municipal status as a borough – including annexation by Bellevue in 1916 and establishment of its own police department that same year! That same decade also saw dramatic growth as new housing developments were erected within town limits; many still stand today testament to how dynamic things were during that time period! The 1920s were some tough times for Kirkland as World War II began to take hold across America – although much progress had been made since then both economically and socially! This included operations such as JCPenney's creation of its first stores outside Main Street during this era which helped fuel local economy even further! However, things changed dramatically when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 resulting in widespread destruction throughout North America including Japan itself – leaving little hope or possibility for any form of reconstruction or reconstruction assistance being offered whatsoever! Kirklands fortunes began turnaround soon after however with help from U S Paper Company president Sam Walton who donated money towards development projects within town limits which led to increased business opportunities thanks to an increase timber industry!!! These days you can find various businesses ranging from small mom & pop shops all the way up to large chain stores like Safeway & Walmart itself!! During these difficult times there have been numerous improvements made both inside/outside townlimits; such as construction of new roads/streets etc……….. Some current examples include: A brand new library/museum complex being constructed just north side main street; plans are currently underway for another hospital/medical center adjacent to existing medical facilities; retailry area extending out beyond downtown boundaries into neighboring Bellevue; extensive renovation/replacing existing sidewalks throughout townlimits…..As always though Town Council meetings are full throttle full discussing all sorts ol' problems related ta'min'….including Butterscotch Bites nevin' bizness

Kirkland, Washington is a town in Pierce County, Washington, United States. The population was 4,533 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from John Kirkland's purchase of land in 1847. The first permanent settler in what is now Kirkland was John Smeaton who moved to the area in 1848. He and his family were part of a group that set out from British Columbia on July 3rd, 1849 and arrived at the mouth of the Duwamish River on September 10th. They named their new home "Island Point" after their point of departure. For many years they maintained an annual sacrifice to Poseidon which included hogs and chickens as well as wine and fruit baskets made by local women. In 1861 Captain George Vancouver explored Puget Sound and sailed past Tacoma Bay on his way back to China with news that gold had been found near Olympia (now Seattle). A group of entrepreneurs led by James Mercer began exploring this potential gold field and soon came across Kirkland Creek which they named "Mercer's Gulch". They erected a small log cabin here in 1863 and began processing cedar logs for export to China. In 1865 they developed an irrigation system using water diverted from the nearby lower Duwamish River. This system allowed them to grow some crops but also produced much timber which was used for building purposes such as Fort Canby (later renamed Tacoma) and several other military installations around Puget Sound during World War I. The mill closed down in 1922 but portions still remain standing including the millrace which forms one end of Pioneer Road today. A post office called "Kirkland" was established at Island Point on November 15th, 1864, by Jno Purdy; it remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907.. The community took its name from John Kirkland who purchased land near Olympia in 1847 when he heard about gold prospects north of Seattle (). After purchasing the land he built a cabin on it known as Isl'ton Point () where he lived until his death circa 1850-51 according to one source (). Other sources claim that Isl'ton Point may have been located east of present day Perkins Road opposite Thurston Lake although this location has not been confirmed with certainty by researchers.. As early settlers arrived more people came through what is now Pierce County looking for farmland or logging rights along Cascade Creek or reasoning that there must be something valuable down there because no one had ever come find it before them (). One such person looking for farmland was Captn George Vancouver who explored Puget Sound in 1861 while going back East toChina with new information about Gold Rush riches near Olympia (). On July 3rd1849 another pioneer family called Smeaton moved into what is now Pierce County from BC via boat landing off Stevens Strait . theirs were two families only . One year later another party under Captn David Wickersham also reached shore but lost all their goods when storm hitshore! Amongst these men were 2nd Lt Jesse Jones & 1st Lieut William Haines both USNRs then active duty Marines serving aboard USS Constitution during WWII few miles offshore
