Kirkland is home to many notable people including author J D Salinger and actor Neil Patrick Harris who both grew up hereabouts before moving on to bigger things (Harris currently resides in Boston). The town also produced several members of Congress including Harry Reid and Patty Murray as well as former Mayor Norm Coleman (now a lobbyist).

Kirkland, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area and was incorporated as a city on December 15, 1907. On January 1, 2015, Kirkland became an unincorporated community within the city of Seattle. The first permanent settler in what is now Kirkland was Pierre Elliott Trudeau who arrived in 1851 from Montreal. The first post office was established in 1879; it closed in 1903. In 1907, the city of Seattle incorporated as a result of county referendum and renamed Kirkland to its current name. In 1962 residents voted to annex part of the neighbouring village of Redmond which had been vacant since 1957 when that municipality merged with Bellevue to form KING County Addition. This annexation created a large rural area adjacent to downtown Seattle that has never seen any significant development due to inconsistent zoning laws which have applied for decades; despite this issue planners continue to seek ways to bring more density and jobs Downtown including through light rail or buses rapid transit service theretoon known as “The People’s Plan” Today Kirkland’s economy largely depends upon services provided by Boeing plants located in Everett and Tacoma; however some businesses active within town include: First Natick Bicycles Cooperative which sells bicycles throughout central King County; Second Nature Nursery & Garden located across from First Natick Bicycles Cooperative; KFC - Landmark Restaurants Inc.; Safeway and other grocery stores also operate within town limits although none are anchor stores like Safeway does outside King County Accordingly most people here live close by either inside or outside their homes making commuting/traveling difficult if not impossible even for those who work Downtown
